Hazelnut and cocoa spread improves flow-mediated dilatation in smokers.
Hazelnut and cocoa spread is an Italian product containing cocoa and hazelnut. Several epidemiological studies suggest that cocoa and hazelnuts cocoa exert beneficial cardiovascular effects. To investigate whether in smokers, hazelnut and cocoa spread elicits artery dilatation via down-regulation of oxidative stress. Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), oxidative stress (as assessed by serum isoprostanes excretion, Nox2 activation and NO bioavailability) and antioxidant status [as assessed by vitamin E levels, plasma total polyphenols and H2O2 breaking down activity (HBA)] were studied in 20 smokers in a crossover, single-blind study. Patients were randomly allocated to 60 g of Hazelnut and cocoa spread or 60 g of milk chocolate (≤ 35% cocoa). FMD, serum isoprostanes, Nox2 activation, NOx, vitamin E, HBA and total polyphenols were assessed at baseline and 2 h after chocolate ingestion. After Hazelnut and cocoa spread intake, FMD and NOx significantly increased (from 4.3 ± 2.8 to 8.0 ± 3.2%, p < 0.001 and from 23.1 ± 5.5 to 32.0 ± 12.6 µM, p = 0.016, respectively); conversely, serum isoprostanes and Nox2 activation significantly decreased (from 302.8 ± 59.8 to 240.7 ± 90.8 pmol/l, p = 0.03 and from 25 ± 4.4 to 22.6 ± 3.2, p = 0.03, respectively). After Hazelnut and cocoa spread intake, serum total polyphenols, vitamin E and HBA significantly increased (from 133.8 ± 49.7 to 202.5 ± 69.5 mg/l GAE, p = 0.001; from 3.56 ± 1.4 to 4.5 ± 1.0 μmol/mmol cholesterol, p = 0.002 and from 63.3 ± 13.2 to 74.2 ± 12.4%, p = 0.003, respectively). No changes in the above variables were observed after milk chocolate intake. A linear correlation analysis shows that Δ (expressed by difference of values between before and after chocolate intake) of FMD correlates with Δ of total polyphenols and Δ of vitamin E. This study shows that Hazelnut and cocoa spread improves FMD with a mechanism potentially involving downregulation of oxidative stress and eventually increased NO generation in smokers.
Improved adherence to Mediterranean Diet in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
PURPOSE: We aimed to assess food intake and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in patients with T1D compared with nondiabetic individuals. METHODS: This was an observational, multicenter study in 262 T1D subjects and 254 age- and sex-matched nondiabetic subjects. A validated food-frequency questionnaire was administered. The alternate Mediterranean Diet Score (aMED) and alternate Healthy Eating Index (aHEI) were assessed. The clinical variables were also collected. The analysis of data included comparisons between groups and multivariate models. RESULTS: Compared to the controls, the patients with T1D had a higher intake of dairy products (p < 0.001), processed meat (p = 0.001), fatty fish (p = 0.009), fruits and vegetables (p < 0.001), nuts (p = 0.011), legumes (p < 0.001), potatoes (p = 0.045), and bread (p = 0.045), and a lower intake of seafood (p = 0.011), sweets (p < 0.001), and alcohol drinks (p = 0.025). This intake pattern resulted in a higher consumption of complex carbohydrates (p = 0.049), fiber (p < 0.001), protein (p < 0.001), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (p = 0.007), antioxidants (p < 0.001), vitamins (p < 0.001), and minerals (p < 0.001). The frequency of patients with T1D and low aMED score (23.2%) was lower than that of the controls (35.4%; p = 0.019). The overall multivariate analysis showed that, among other factors, being a T1D subject was associated with improved aMED and aHEI scores (p = 0.006 and p < 0.001). In patients with T1D, residing in a nonurban area was associated with improved aMED and aHEI scores (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Adult patients with T1D showed healthier dietary habits and a higher adherence to the Mediterranean Diet than nondiabetic subjects. Residing in a nonurban area is associated with an improved dietary pattern.
Molecular evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity of phenolic lipid extracted from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL).
BACKGROUND: Anacardium occidentale L phenolic lipid (LDT11) is used in traditional medicine as anti-inflammatory, astringent, antidiarrheal, anti-asthmatic and depurative. Phenolic derivatives, such as anacardic acid, extracted from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) have demonstrated biological and pharmacological properties, and its profile makes it a candidate for the development of new anti-inflammatory agents. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory profile of a derivative, synthesized from LDT11, on an in vitro cellular model. METHODS: Organic synthesis of the phenolic derivative of CNSL that results in the hemi-synthetic compound LDT11. The cytotoxicity of the planned compound, LDT11, was analyzed in murine macrophages cell line, RAW264.7. The cells were previously treated with LDT11, and then, the inflammation was stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), in intervals of 6 h and 24 h. The analysis of the gene expression of inflammatory markers (TNFα, iNOS, COX-2, NF-κB, IL-1β and IL-6), nitric oxide (NO) dosage, and cytokine IL-6 were realized. RESULTS: The results showed that the phenolic derivative, LDT11, influenced the modulatory gene expression. The relative gene transcripts quantification demonstrated that the LDT11 disclosed an immunoprotective effect against inflammation by decreasing genes expression when compared with cells stimulated with LPS in the control group. The NO and IL-6 dosages confirmed the results found in gene expression. DISCUSSION: The present study evaluated the immunoprotective effect of LDT11. In addition to a significant reduction in the expression of inflammatory genes, LDT11 also had a faster and superior anti-inflammatory action than the commercial products, and its response was already evident in the test carried out six hours after the treatment of the cells. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated LDT11 is potentially valuable as a rapid immunoprotective anti-inflammatory agent. Treatment with LDT11 decreased the gene expression of inflammatory markers, and the NO, and IL-6 production. When compared to commercial drugs, LDT11 showed a superior anti-inflammatory action.
Antioxidative Capacity of and Contaminant Concentrations in Processed Plum Products Consumed in Romania.
The bioactive compounds (total phenols, anthocyanins, and flavonoids) and antioxidant activity of plum-based products (prunes, jams, and marmalade) were evaluated based on spectrophotometric assays and acrylamide and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde concentrations to determine the quality and safety of these products in the Romanian marketplace. The total polyphenol concentrations in prunes, marmalade, and jams were 0.93 to 5.63 g of gallic acid equivalent per kg of dry matter, and the antioxidant activity was 3.0 to 17.2 mmol/kg. The concentrations of potentially harmful acrylamide in the plum products ranged from the limit of quantitation (<20 μg/kg) to 37.44 μg/kg, and the concentration was higher in prunes (26.66 to 163.72 μg/kg) than in jams. The 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde concentrations in plum products were also variable, at 36 to 2,149 mg/kg. These data revealed a very low concentration of acrylamide in thermally processed plum products, and the results for total polyphenols and the antioxidant activity of prunes and plum jams may be relevant for evaluating these products as important sources of bioactive compounds.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
BACKGROUND: Evidence on the health effects of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) is equivocal. Fish oils are rich in omega-3 PUFA and plant oils in omega-6 PUFA. Evidence suggests that increasing PUFA-rich foods, supplements or supplemented foods can reduce serum cholesterol, but may increase body weight, so overall cardiovascular effects are unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess effects of increasing total PUFA intake on cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, lipids and adiposity in adults. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE and Embase to April 2017 and clinicaltrials.gov and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform to September 2016, without language restrictions. We checked trials included in relevant systematic reviews. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing higher with lower PUFA intakes in adults with or without cardiovascular disease that assessed effects over 12 months or longer. We included full texts, abstracts, trials registry entries and unpublished data. Outcomes were all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality and events, risk factors (blood lipids, adiposity, blood pressure), and adverse events. We excluded trials where we could not separate effects of PUFA intake from other dietary, lifestyle or medication interventions. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently screened titles and abstracts, assessed trials for inclusion, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. We wrote to authors of included trials for further data. Meta-analyses used random-effects analysis, sensitivity analyses included fixed-effects and limiting to low summary risk of bias. We assessed GRADE quality of evidence. MAIN RESULTS: We included 49 RCTs randomising 24,272 participants, with duration of one to eight years. Eleven included trials were at low summary risk of bias, 33 recruited participants without cardiovascular disease. Baseline PUFA intake was unclear in most trials, but 3.9% to 8% of total energy intake where reported. Most trials gave supplemental capsules, but eight gave dietary advice, eight gave supplemental foods such as nuts or margarine, and three used a combination of methods to increase PUFA.Increasing PUFA intake probably has little or no effect on all-cause mortality (risk 7.8% vs 7.6%, risk ratio (RR) 0.98, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.89 to 1.07, 19,290 participants in 24 trials), but probably slightly reduces risk of coronary heart disease events from 14.2% to 12.3% (RR 0.87, 95% CI 0.72 to 1.06, 15 trials, 10,076 participants) and cardiovascular disease events from 14.6% to 13.0% (RR 0.89, 95% CI 0.79 to 1.01, 17,799 participants in 21 trials), all moderate-quality evidence. Increasing PUFA may slightly reduce risk of coronary heart disease death (6.6% to 6.1%, RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.78 to 1.06, 9 trials, 8810 participants) andstroke (1.2% to 1.1%, RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.58 to 1.44, 11 trials, 14,742 participants, though confidence intervals include important harms), but has little or no effect on cardiovascular mortality (RR 1.02, 95% CI 0.82 to 1.26, 16 trials, 15,107 participants) all low-quality evidence. Effects of increasing PUFA on major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events and atrial fibrillation are unclear as evidence is of very low quality.Increasing PUFA intake slightly reduces total cholesterol (mean difference (MD) -0.12 mmol/L, 95% CI -0.23 to -0.02, 26 trials, 8072 participants) and probably slightly decreases triglycerides (MD -0.12 mmol/L, 95% CI -0.20 to -0.04, 20 trials, 3905 participants), but has little or no effect on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (MD -0.01 mmol/L, 95% CI -0.02 to 0.01, 18 trials, 4674 participants) or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (MD -0.01 mmol/L, 95% CI -0.09 to 0.06, 15 trials, 3362 participants). Increasing PUFA probably causes slight weight gain (MD 0.76 kg, 95% CI 0.34 to 1.19, 12 trials, 7100 participants).Effects of increasing PUFA on serious adverse events such as pulmonary embolism and bleeding are unclear as the evidence is of very low quality. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: This is the most extensive systematic review of RCTs conducted to date to assess effects of increasing PUFA on cardiovascular disease, mortality, lipids or adiposity. Increasing PUFA intake probably slightly reduces risk of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease events, may slightly reduce risk of coronary heart disease mortality and stroke (though not ruling out harms), but has little or no effect on all-cause or cardiovascular disease mortality. The mechanism may be via lipid reduction, but increasing PUFA probably slightly increases weight.

“Nuts are in our blood, they are part of our DNA”
Restaurant Can Bosch, in the Catalan coastal town of Cambrils, has held a Michelin star for more than three decades. The restaurant’s Head Chef Joan Bosch has just been awarded with the 2018 INC Award for Excellence in Gastronomy. The latest of many recognitions he has received for helping to shoot the Mediterranean cuisine to the top of the international gastronomic rankings. Yet, Joan Bosch’s approach is humble as he explains how his first encounter with the gastronomic world came by chance. Chef Bosch’s parents, his mother an excellent cook and his father a seaman, opened a restaurant where he began his career at a very early age, soon driven by a sheer amount of energy, enthusiasm and the ongoing desire to amaze customers with brand new dishes. Nuts and dried fruits indeed play a prominent role in his cuisine following the region’s tradition, well known for incorporating these ingredients into the foundation of their cooking.
You have just been recognized with the INC Award for Excellence in Gastronomy. Would you have ever imagined to be at the top of your profession when you took over your parents’ restaurant?
I would have never imagined to reach this far, but I am indeed very honored to have a quality restaurant in this moment. I did not start in the restaurant business by choice either. We come from a fisherman’s family, my mum was a great cook and my dad went with the seamen to fish. I am an only child and we started running a bar where people could order the usual vermú, cockles, olives, crisps... Later on we introduced a few tapas dishes on the menu and from there we moved on to mixed platters, after that we moved to a very classical seafood cuisine, in fact fish has always been in the restaurant’s DNA and we know it well. Besides, we always counted on my Dad to bring us good products back from the sea.
Did it ever cross your mind to do something different from a professional perspective?
It didn´t back then. We opened the bar when I was very young, I´d just finished high school, and at that age unless you have a very defined idea of what you are going to do, it is difficult to go in that direction.
You mention that times were very different back then. Do you wish that when you started as a chef the cuisine world had the glamour that it has nowadays? Would it have been easier?
Yes, as soon as I started to take on the role as my own. I could see that people enjoyed what we were producing and could sense that we could go beyond but obviously without being aware of what we could actually reach. After a while we began setting certain goals although it was difficult to follow then as there were hardly any culinary schools in those times.
Your restaurant Can Bosch has held a Michelin star since 1984. What does it take to be a great chef and achieve and maintain such success?
Successful restaurants are those who hold two or three stars. One Michelin star is great to have as a reference point which ensures that quality food is going to be served at that restaurant. In reference to what’s necessary, you need to like it, otherwise it is not possible to last for so long because there are always ups and downs throughout time. You also need a lot of energy, great enthusiasm and the desire to always amaze customers with a different dish and little details that also count, not just food related, but also aspects that are not mentioned so often such as the restaurant’s dining area, which is its face. Everything has to be aligned to make a good impression so that customers are able to leave the restaurant with a positive feeling.
How would you describe your cooking style?
It´s an honest cooking style in terms that we use seasonal products, and a signature cuisine too. There are always a number of popular dishes that we tend to include on the menu if possible. But we always change the dishes depending on the season.
What is there in the Mediterranean region to be the home of so many recognized restaurants and reputable chefs?
Above all we are very much supported by the area’s culinary schools. We have also seen cutting edge chefs here, such as Adrià, the late Santi Santamaría, the Roca brothers at present… It is difficult to mention them all. That fact along with the culinary schools lately reinforced by TV programs has also helped. On top of that, the country has a great cooking tradition with its suquets, zarzuelas, calderetas, for instance, which have always been accompanied by the region’s quality nuts and dried fruits, which have been the backbone of many fish and meat dishes.
What do nuts and dried fruits add to a dish?
In our area, nuts and dried fruits have always been present not only in restaurants, but also in bars, as starters, guisos, picadas, and so on.
What is the nut that is never missing in your kitchen?
Hazelnuts and almonds are never missing at home. Of course you could always find other nuts and dried fruits but those two will always be present. And if they are from our region even more so.
Finally, how do you get inspired to cook?
Since I started working as a chef I get inspired very easily, seeing a simple dish for instance, but what I love the most is to go to the market, where I would love to buy everything to do different things, though it is always one thing what you would like to do, and another what you can do. But if possible, I always let myself get carried away by my imagination.
Modern Eating and the New Culture of Snacking
As The Hartman Group’s 2013 Modern Eating report first highlighted, traditional eating patterns built around three “square,” structured meals a day has given way to modern eating styles characterized by frequent snacking that often occurs unsystematically and varies from person to person.
Snacking is now so entwined in our food and beverage culture that it makes up fully half of all eating occasions, and 47 percent of U.S. consumers say that most days they can’t get through the day without a snack.
What’s happening to America’s traditional eating behaviors and patterns? We now eat and drink what we want, when we want and anywhere we want. Sometimes planned, more often on a whim. An energy bar or fruit smoothie may replace breakfast one day or serve as lunch the next day. Perhaps a bowl of cereal before bedtime. Nothing seems to be as it once was. We long for the good old days when meal planning and eating was all so routine and predictable.
As haphazard as that behavior seems, the patterns are not random. Eating is tied viscerally to the changing rhythms of people’s daily lives, including their perception that they are overbooked and their need to feel healthy and satisfied by food at the same time they take care of their families’ disparate eating needs.
The challenge for food and beverage companies is to understand these new and changing rhythms continues today as we welcome food culture’s new era of retail disruption and diversification that snacking has unleashed.
“How we go about planning, acquiring and consuming food has been disrupted, and the result of that disruption has been in many cases the displacement of meals and a lot of variation in when and how and what gets consumed. An elevated focus on food and beverage for nutrition and a growing interest in global flavors have fueled an evolution in snacking behaviors and preferences,” said Tamara Barnett, Vice President of Strategic Insights at The Hartman Group.
The Hartman Group’s research finds that modern food and beverage culture is marked by fragmentation and an upending of tradition. While culturally we idealize three balanced meals a day, we rarely eat that way. Today, meal planning, shopping and cooking is decentralized, and there are fewer rules about what to eat and drink. In fact, we are much more comfortable with eating on the fly. Eating and drinking can happen anywhere and everywhere and at any time. No eating or drinking occasion typifies the fragmented, decentralized and no-rules modern food and beverage culture more than snacking.
Evidence of this shift in behavior can be seen in the emergence of restaurants as a source for snacks. The Hartman Group’s Future of Snacking 2016 report finds that, despite being the source for 81 percent of snack occasions, traditional food retailers are losing share to a divergent array of alternative retail sources — notably restaurants. Restaurants have become increasingly savvy about emerging consumer needs for smaller menu items within the now-blurry space between meals and snacks.
“Snacking was about diversion and fun before,” Barnett points out, highlighting a shift toward health and wellness, fresh and premium. “The food industry has responded to this desire for fresh and minimally processed food and beverages, and there has been a proliferation of small, premium-quality brands that are now competing with those larger legacy brands.”
Snacking is no longer about a specific product category but rather about a set of behaviors — -a way of eating and drinking —a kind of occasion. In other words, anything and everything can be a snack —-and increasingly is.
It’s little wonder then why forward-thinking food manufacturers, retailers and food service operators are in a race to reformulate, repackage, reportion and revamp products and menus to better fit with these changing eating and drinking habits.
The Hartman Group’s Culture of Food 2015: New Appetites, New Routines report details the shifts that lead to snacking, describing how consumers eat around their schedules rather than scheduling around mealtimes. Dinner has become a mere pause between other activities. Lunch is often scheduled out to accommodate an overflow of meetings and must-do’s. And breakfast can be multitasked between commuting and working. This is our modern time deficient, which is heavily influencing an ad hoc shift in eating styles.
The ad hoc approach to mealtimes is increasingly part of new eating routines. While dinner remains an important social meal occasion, breakfast and lunch occasions are routinely “snackified,” especially during the workweek. This opens up schedules and frees up time from planning, cooking and cleaning.
On these no-cook, snackified occasions, consumers are eating a mix of packaged and prepared foods (yogurt cup, deli sushi/sandwiches) with some fresh ingredients (snacking fruit, salad bar). Or they may outsource these low-stakes occasions to food service. Reflecting these changes in eating habits, dining out is not just for special occasions but an everyday approach to “getting food.”
While a good deal of the shifts in food and beverage culture have been towards fresher and less processed foods, the fact is that we are giving up meal occasions with others or combining eating with other tasks as the need for productivity compels us to move forward. Many consumers also believe that hectic American lifestyles lead to poor eating habits.
Beyond the increased frequency with which we snack, snacks themselves have evolved far beyond conventional categories to include fresh items and higher-quality products and involve both food and beverage items.
Trend Toward Healthier
Snacking is becoming healthier, and healthy snacking is as much about ways of eating as it is about product attributes, with beliefs that eating small amounts of food every few hours is healthier than eating three big meals a day, that distributing small treat moments helps to avoid overindulgent binges and that overall balance can be achieved by rotating indulgent and non-indulgent.
Shopping for Snacks
With so many channels and stores available to consumers, shoppers keep a working geography of stores and restaurants that reflect certain patterns in snack purchasing and consumption behavior. These behaviors include:
- Pantry stocking for snacks. Occurring most notably at grocery, supercenter, mass market and club retailers.
- Trips for immediate-consumption snacks. Are being made most notably to restaurants, convenience stores and drugstores.
- Snack stashing. Occuring when consumers primarily source from home to have snacks on hand throughout their day.
Barnett says that, as the Future of Snacking 2016 report finds, while the phenomenon of snacking is messy and at times hard to fully describe, coherence is brought to snacking by examining how three key drivers — Nourishment, Optimization and Pleasure—represent a thematic shift in food values and are connected to the needs driving snacking occasions.
“Snacks should be developed to deliver on the increasing need for nourishment, optimization or pleasure on the go. Consider not only how package design can simplify on-the-go user experiences but even how the product itself can really enable a mobile lifestyle.”
The future of snacking, Barnett said, will fully embrace freshness. Retailers and manufacturers alike should consider offering a product mix that reflects the desire for fresh but also recognizes the role of iconic and more processed favorites. “Think about fresh expectations that consumers now have when it comes to snacks. Does your product formulation as well as all aspects of the product signal contemporary notions of freshness and quality, or does it need to be revamped?”

Healthy Eating Trends in Europe
In recent years there has been an overall growth in demand for “healthy” food and drink products. In some cases, items that a consumer perceives as healthy might be at odds with the reality, but what we can say for sure is that there is certainly an interest in trying to eat better. A recent survey by IRI International, revealed that two-thirds (70%) of people across Europe are buying healthy food - with less salt, sugar, fat or calories. This is an increase of 41% in just three years.
One of the reasons for this is simply more awareness about the role that food plays in health and wellness. This is thanks to the media in general and social media in particular, which can ignite interest in food fads very rapidly, for example avocado and coconut oil which have become very popular due to promotion by celebrities in social media. In recently times there have also been some high-profile incidents that raise questions about the safety of the food chain, and so more people are also paying attention to the quality of the food that they eat.
In this article we will look in more detail at the findings of the IRI research, which was conducted among shoppers in seven European countries (Italy, Greece, Spain, Germany, France, the UK and Holland) about their attitudes and purchase behaviour around wellness foods.
Motivations for Healthier Eating
In addition to general healthy food, the categories that were looked included free-from, organic and vegetarian foods. The penetration levels of each category are already significant with organic food bought by 53% and vegetarian food bought by 39% of Europeans.
Whilst choosing these first three types of wellness food are down purely to personal choice, intolerance or free-from foods were originally developed to fulfill dietary need. A category which barely even existed just a few years ago, those foods that are free from things like lactose, gluten and yeast are now purchased by 33% of households across Europe. This figure is well in excess of estimates for people who suffer from food intolerance so it’s clear that this category is driven by choice as well as need.
The research revealed that half of Europeans are actively seeking some wellness benefits from the food that they purchase while 15% have health problems related to nutrition. Other reasons to buy wellness foods included seeking something that is additive free (34%) and to protect the environment (22%).
With obesity becoming a key challenge for health across Europe, it is encouraging to see that one in four shoppers (26%) are eating more healthily because they want to achieve weight loss. Spanish and Dutch shoppers are more driven by the need to lose weight in their healthy eating habits than any other country. It is perhaps surprising not to see more German or British shoppers driven by weight loss given that these countries rank among the highest in the list of European countries more than half of the population being overweight (Eurostat research from 2014).
Growth in Healthy Eating
Across all four types of wellness food, shoppers are buying more now compared to 2-3 years ago, healthy food had increased by 41%, organic by a third (34%) and vegetarian and free-from foods by a quarter (26% and 24% respectively).
What’s more interesting though is that this sector still has far to go. When asked in the next six months whether they intended to spend more, just under a fifth were going to increase their spend across the four different categories.
Generational Differences
There are differing motivations amongst the generations in terms of why they are seeking healthier foods, and these reasons are cumulatively driving the overall increase. In terms of the ageing population across Europe, health naturally becomes a focus and reason for taking more care of what is consumed.
At the other end of the spectrum, we see a clear focus on health for the Millennials. This group purchased more across all four groups. Healthy foods in general have the highest audience, with 78% of Millennials purchasing them – eight percentage points more than the total market. The biggest difference between this group compared to others though is vegetarian foods, which is purchased by over half of the Millennials surveyed (54%), which is 15% higher than the total market. What is clear from the results of this study is that the Millennial audience is a key one to target in the future.
How to be Healthier
In terms of what it takes to be healthy, a majority of people (60%) believe you can achieve a healthy diet by eating more fruit and vegetables. The next most important tools to use are being more aware of what you’re buying with 29% mentioning dedicating enough time to read the ingredient list and 26% checking the nutritional fact labels.
Wellness foods are mainly sought out in supermarkets and hypermarkets, followed by bio or health-food stores. Online stores are well positioned as alternative places to buy healthy products, offering an opportunity to improve penetration and spending for online retailers.
The Future for Wellness Foods
Wellness foods are clearly not the concern of just a niche group of people as they might once have been, with a small selection tucked away at the back of the supermarket. There is a huge opportunity here for manufacturers and retailers alike to tap into the growth potential across the wellness foods sector.
For manufacturers there are two ways that they can do this. Firstly, by working on the communications around their existing products, to play up their health credentials and make labelling clear and impactful. Secondly there is room to innovate with new, healthier versions of well-loved product lines. For retailers, helping shoppers to find and navigate the healthier product offerings and motivating them to choose them are the ways they can make the most of this opportunity.
