Effects of walnut consumption on blood lipids and other cardiovascular risk factors: an updated meta-analysis and systematic review of controlled trials.
BACKGROUND: Intervention studies suggest that incorporating walnuts into the diet may improve blood lipids without promoting weight gain. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials evaluating the effects of walnut consumption on blood lipids and other cardiovascular risk factors. Design: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed and EMBASE databases (from database inception to January 2018) of clinical trials comparing walnut-enriched diets with control diets. We performed random-effects meta-analyses comparing walnut-enriched and control diets for changes in pre-post intervention in blood lipids (mmol/L), apolipoproteins (mg/dL), body weight (kg), and blood pressure (mm Hg). RESULTS: Twenty-six clinical trials with a total of 1059 participants were included. The following weighted mean differences (WMDs) in reductions were obtained for walnut-enriched diets compared with control groups: −6.99 mg/dL (95% CI: −9.39, −4.58 mg/dL; P < 0.001) (3.25% greater reduction) for total blood cholesterol (TC) and −5.51 mg/dL (95% CI: −7.72, −3.29 mg/dL; P < 0.001) (3.73% greater reduction) for low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Triglyceride concentrations were also reduced in walnut-enriched diets compared with control [WMD = −4.69 (95% CI: −8.93, −0.45); P = 0.03; 5.52% greater reduction]. More pronounced reductions in blood lipids were observed when walnut interventions were compared with American and Western diets [WMD for TC = −12.30 (95% CI: −23.17, −1.43) and for LDL = −8.28 (95% CI: −13.04, −3.51); P < 0.001]. Apolipoprotein B (mg/dL) was also reduced significantly more on walnut-enriched diets compared with control groups [WMD = −3.74 (95% CI: −6.51, −0.97); P = 0.008] and a trend towards a reduction was observed for apolipoprotein A [WMD = −2.91 (95% CI: −5.98, 0.08); P = 0.057]. Walnut-enriched diets did not lead to significant differences in weight change (kg) compared with control diets [WMD = −0.12 (95% CI: −2.12, 1.88); P = 0.90], systolic blood pressure (mm Hg) [WMD = −0.72 (95% CI: −2.75, 1.30); P = 0.48], or diastolic blood pressure (mm Hg) [WMD = −0.10 (95% CI: −1.49, 1.30); P = 0.88]. Conclusions: Incorporating walnuts into the diet improved blood lipid profile without adversely affecting body weight or blood pressure.
Nut consumption and the risk of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma in the Golestan Cohort Study.
BACKGROUND: Nut consumption has been inversely associated with gastric cancer incidence in US-based studies, but not with oesophageal cancer. However, there is aetiologic heterogeneity, among oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cases in low-risk vs. high-risk populations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between nut consumption and risk of ESCC in a high-risk population. METHODS: The Golestan Cohort Study enroled 50,045 participants in Northeastern Iran, between 2004 and 2008. Intake of peanuts, walnuts and mixed nuts (including seeds) were assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire at baseline. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals for subsequent ESCC adjusted for potential confounders. Non-consumers of nuts were used as the reference category and the consumers were categorised into tertiles. RESULTS: We accrued 280 incident ESCC cases during 337,983 person-years of follow up. Individuals in the highest tertiles of total nut consumption, and mixed nut consumption were significantly associated with lower risk of developing ESCC compared to non-consumers (HR = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.39-0.93, p-trend = 0.02, and HR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.32-0.84, p trend = 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: We found a statistically significant inverse association between total nut consumption and the risk of ESCC in this high-risk population.

The screen also showed a map for each product where nutritional information and the main producing countries for each nut and dried fruit were specified.

13th European Nutrition Conference
The FENS European Nutrition Conference is held once every four years, and is the premier European meeting in its field.
The theme for the 2019 conference is “Malnutrition in an Obese World: European Perspectives”.
The scientific programme will feature the best international speakers, covering a wide programme of subject areas across the spectrum of nutritional science in plenary and parallel session formats. Both oral and poster presentation opportunities for submitted papers and invited speaker slots, will be included in the four-day programme. A range of other sessions, such as workshops sessions, special “Hot Topic” presentations, industrial symposia, panel debates, and satellite symposia or sessions hosted by related organisations and societies are welcome. There is sufficient meeting space within the venue to accommodate a wide range of smaller meetings and sessions, as well as nearby hotels, should any visiting societies wish to hold private meetings off-site.

Nuts as Part of Cancer Recurrence Prevention
Cancer has been known to be the second leading cause of mortality worldwide, since in 2012 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reported around 14 million new cancer cases and approximately 8,201,600 cancer deaths (1). As a result, interest in developing effective preventive strategies has increased dramatically.
Cancer refers to a group of diseases affecting various organs, the development of which is determined by different factors. Therefore, their prognoses may vary across different cancer subtypes. Cancer is characterized by a loss of genetic control over cell growth and proliferation (2). For years this loss was attributed to genetic and hereditary factors, whereas nowadays environmental and, in particular, lifestyle factors, such as diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and obesity are known to play an important role in the development of the disease (3). In the context of diet, a large number of dietary and nutritional components, including vegetable protein, monounsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, phenolic compounds, selenium, vegetable fiber, folic acid and phytoestrogens, can modulate specific cancer-related processes e.g. regulation of cell differentiation and proliferation, reduction of tumor initiation and promotion, DNA protection, and regulation of immunologic and inflammatory responses (4). Nuts are particularly rich in these and other interesting nutrients with the ability to provide beneficial effects on health. In fact, the regular consumption of nuts in the context of a healthy diet has been observed to reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, as well as to improve insulin resistance, both of which are factors associated with an increased risk of cancer and cancer recurrence (5). Therefore, nut consumption could play an important role in primary cancer prevention.
However, current evidence about nutrition in cancer survivors is rather limited compared to that of primary cancer prevention. Studies among these patients have mostly shown that adherence to healthy dietary patterns seem to be beneficial for cancer survival rates, all-cause and cancer-specific mortality (6-8). Such healthy dietary patterns, like the Mediterranean or prudent diet, are characterized by frequent consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, lean meat and pulses. They do not include high-fat, high sugar foods, red and processed meat, while alcohol and certain nutrients (i.e., fiber and fat) are consumed in moderation. These observations have been found particularly in certain subtypes of cancer, such as breast, prostate and bowel/colon cancer8. Although this evidence is included in the American Cancer Society dietary recommendations for cancer survivors (9), released in 2012, specific information about nut intake and the prevention of cancer recurrence is currently lacking in these guidelines. In fact, very few studies have evaluated the association between cancer recurrence and mortality, with the frequency of nut intake in cancer patients (10-12). In 2016, Wang and coworkers examined 4,346 healthcare professionals from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study who were diagnosed with prostate cancer and the associations between frequency of nut intake and cancer recurrence and mortality. The authors observed that those prostate cancer patients who, after the diagnosis, consumed 5 or more servings a week (28g/serving) of nuts had a 34% lower overall risk of death, compared with those consuming less than once per month. Importantly, these benefits were observed for both peanuts and other nut types, and regardless of the initial nut intake before the prostate cancer diagnosis. This evidence is consistent with that from another study in the same cohort of patients, where the consumption of 1 serving a day of nuts after a prostate cancer diagnosis showed a suggestive 18% lower risk of lethal prostate cancer (10). Likewise, another study recently published in 2018 (12), which included 826 colon-cancer patients in advanced stage following coadjutant chemotherapy, has reported beneficial effects between nut intake (in tree nuts, but not in peanuts) and cancer survival and recurrence. After controlling for many other factors, the authors showed that participants consuming 2 or more nut servings a week after a cancer diagnosis vs. non-consumers had 42% lower risk of cancer recurrence or death, as well as a 57% lower risk of dying from any cause.
Overall, current scientific evidence associating nut consumption and cancer survival or mortality is limited and mostly focused on very few cancer types. However, the beneficial effects of frequent consumption of nuts are plausible among cancer patients for a better prognosis of the disease. Future studies into this topic should focus on evaluating the potential role of nut intake after diagnosis in patients with other cancer subtypes, who may benefit from this nutritious and complete food. Moreover, it is necessary to investigate the potential beneficial effects of the different types of nuts in cancer patients across different countries in order to be able to translate this scientific information into clinical guidelines for oncology patients.

The World Heart Federation’s World Congress of Cardiology & Cardiovascular Health 2018 is returning to Dubai to host an outstanding lineup of world leaders in cardiology, cardiovascular medicine and health.
The 2012 World Congress of Cardiology held in Dubai saw health professionals participate in over 150 sessions and workshops. Since then Dubai has seen the growth and integration of global scientific and health leadership to meet the new health challenges in the region namely the continuing use of tobacco, the rise in obesity rates and the corresponding increase in the prevalence of diabetes all contributing to the emerging burden of circulatory diseases.
